PORN & HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Porn is what fuels the demand in the sex trafficking industry. This industry functions like a business, and just like in any business the supply of a product is driven by the amount of consumer demand. Lack of demand for a product eliminates the profitability of a business. The logic is the same in sex trafficking – if there is no demand to buy human beings, there would be no market for traffickers looking to sell them. This demand is birthed from pornography…and it fuels the industry every day. To eradicate the epidemic of human trafficking – we must see that the root of the problem is in the cultural messages of pornography that encourage exploitation and abuse.

Although it’s common to think that what you do privately in your room doesn’t hurt anyone, but this is NOT a victimless act. The reality is: with every mouse click, page turned, movie watched, strip club visited, etc – you are perpetuating and supporting the demand for an industry where human beings are forced, drugged, manipulated, and threatened into this commercial sex industry. Realize that even the actors or models you watch in pornography are not there for the pleasure, nor even for the money, but because they have been manipulated or tricked in some way. The business of human trafficking exists not because of a vulnerable population- it exists because people are willing to buy sex. Just to make this very clear, here are some sickening facts:

• Every second: $3,000 are spent on pornography and 28, 000 Internet users are viewing pornographic websites.
• There are 68 million daily search engine requests for porn related content
• The average age of buyer is 41, 96% of these buyers are married, and 49% polled identify themselves as Christians.
• Average age when first view of porn is 11 and the largest group viewing online pornography is ages 12 to 17. This is how young a distorted view of sex begins!

Child pornography is one of the fastest growing businesses online. Before being shut down, 75,000 people joined website called babyrape.com, giving their personal credit card information so they can view child pornography.

Currently the #1 criminal industry is trafficking of drugs and weapons. Before long, this will become number 2 to sex and labor trafficking of persons. Criminals realize this is a more profitable business because drugs and weapons can only be sold once, and a human being can be sold over and over and over. This is sick.

You have to realize that porn and porn culture is deceiving. It creates a fantasy of what sex looks like, and instantly begins to desensitize you. This can lead people down a slippery slope where there is a need for more – and eventually many people find themselves in a situation they never imagined – on websites like babyrape.com or backpage.com, or opening their car door to a girl with the intention to pay for sex. So, in our minds, we must make this connection…if you are looking at porn you are contributing to and supporting the sex trafficking industry.

Until this mind shift takes place – this crime will continue to flourish under the radar and we will continue to be desensitized, ignorant, and complacent. Sex trafficking will NOT cease to exist until we eradicate the demand. Yes, we need non-profit organizations, strict laws and favor with the justice system to fight this crime well – but even as victims are rescued, the supply will continue to be replenished to feed the relentless demand for it. So what we really need most is an encounter with Jesus Christ and the strength He provides to turn away from pornography! He died for our sins so that we can be alive in him and free from bondage! The demand for sex trafficking will not stop until our hearts are filled with the love of Jesus Christ. That will bring freedom, hope, change, redemption and revolution!
